In a tragic incident on Thursday, a mother and her 15-year-old daughter lost their lives after drowning in a newly excavated pond located in Balia village, within the jurisdiction of Nandapur police in Koraput district.
The victims have been identified as Nabina Majhi, aged 40, and her daughter Ambika Majhi. They were residents of Harganda village in the Nandapur block.
Reports indicate that the pair had traveled to their farmland in Balia to tend to their ginger crops.
While Nabina was occupied with farm duties, Ambika decided to take a bath in the pond, unaware of its dangerous depth.
As she began to struggle in the water, Nabina heard her daughter's cries for help and rushed to rescue her, but tragically, both drowned.
A rescue team led by Hemant Kumar Samal, the Officer In-Charge of Nandapur fire services, recovered their bodies and turned them over to the police.
Nandapur police have opened a case (13/2025) regarding the unnatural deaths and are currently investigating the matter, as stated by Inspector In-Charge Mamata Panda.
The bodies are being held at the morgue of the Nandapur community health center and will be released to the family following a post-mortem scheduled for Friday.
